Geography

At Barton Clough Primary School, we aim to inspire curiosity and exploration, encouraging children to think like geographers. We want them to confidently question, observe, collect data, and analyse their findings. Through the Geography curriculum we help pupils understand how Geography shapes our lives and develop the skills to contribute to improving the world around them.

We follow the Kapow Primary Scheme, where enquiry questions form the core of our units. This helps pupils apply geographical knowledge and skills to answer open-ended questions, encouraging real engagement and purposeful learning. By tackling these questions, children learn to collect, interpret, and present data using geographical methods and make informed decisions. Each unit includes geographical skills and fieldwork to ensure regular practice. We ensure inclusivity for pupils with Special Educational Needs by offering tailored support and resources to meet diverse learning needs. Our goal is to make learning accessible and engaging for all.  The units follow an enquiry cycle—question, observe, measure, record, and present—based on the National Curriculum. Fieldwork ranges from activities on school grounds to larger visits, helping pupils build and reinforce their skills across multiple units.

Pupils start each lesson by answering key questions about their prior learning, allowing teachers to assess progress and identify gaps. Our goal is for children to leave school with the skills and knowledge needed to confidently study Geography at Key Stage 3. We aim to inspire curious geographers who respect and appreciate the world and understand the connection between human and physical geography.
