Physical Education

At Barton Clough, we are proud to have earned our Gold School Games mark.

We use PE Passport to deliver our Physical Education programme. Teachers explicitly teach children the skills and strategies they need to develop strong fine and gross motor skills, as well as to understand the rules, tactics, and strategies of a wide range of sports and games. Lessons are progressive and taught sequentially across the year, with engaging activities that promote a lifelong love of physical activity and sport.

Our KS2 pupils also benefit from PE lessons delivered by a sports coach from PE and Sports Hub, alongside school staff every Friday.

Year 5 pupils attend weekly swimming lessons for 3 half-terms each year, gaining confidence in the water, learning to swim 25 metres unaided, and perform basic life-saving techniques.

We instil in our pupils the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle, and give them the opportunity to engage in games, athletics, dance and gymnastics each year, to find areas that spark pupils’ interests.

We use pupil voice to identify these areas of interest from our PE curriculum, and offer these as free after school clubs for pupils to explore interests further.

We further explore and develop pupils’ interests by engaging in local competitions and sports festivals through
