At Barton Clough Primary School, we aim to inspire curiosity and creativity, helping children understand local, national, and global history. We encourage critical thinking, asking questions, and analysing historical evidence. Through the History curriculum, we focus on key events and people, showing how things have changed over time. History helps children appreciate different societies, understand people’s actions, and develop empathy by learning from past mistakes.
We follow the Kapow Primary Scheme, where each unit focuses on chronology, helping children understand the time period they are studying and compare it to other parts of the world. Lessons are hands-on and engaging, allowing children to explore different aspects of history. In EYFS, children reflect on their own past and compare characters from stories, including historical figures, to deepen their understanding. In Key Stage 1, they begin to place people and events in order, building a ‘mental timeline’ that they continue to develop in Key Stage 2. This helps them see connections and patterns in history. Using Kapow, pupils learn about timelines, historical connections, and research skills. They are introduced to key concepts like power, invasion, empire, religion, trade, and culture to prepare for future learning in History.
Pupils start each lesson by answering key questions about their prior learning, allowing teachers to assess progress and identify any gaps. Our goal is for children to leave school with the skills and knowledge needed to confidently study History at Key Stage 3. They will be curious learners who ask questions and know how to find evidence. They will also be critical thinkers, able to make informed and balanced judgments based on their understanding of history.
