At Barton Clough Primary School we follow a PSHE Education (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) that is a planned programme of learning through which our young children will acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives – now and in the future.
As part of our whole school approach following the Jigsaw PSHE Education scheme, all children have learning opportunities that support in developing the qualities and attributes our pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of the community.
The Jigsaw PSHE Education is an approach that embodies a positive philosophy and creative teaching and learning activities to nurture children’s development as compassionate and well-rounded human beings as well as building their capacity to learn.
Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, compulsory Relationships and Health Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. It is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same them (puzzle piece) at the same time but at their own level. Throughout the year there are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) and each year group is taught one lesson per week. All lessons ae delivered in age and key stage appropriate ways to meet pupil’s needs. The 6 puzzles include:
– Being Me In My World – a sense of belonging, welcoming others, being part of a community
– Celebrating Differences – similarities and differences, teaches about diversity such as disability, racism, power, friendships and conflict
– Dreams and Goals – help children think about their hopes and dreams, their goals for success, personal strengths and how to overcome challenges
– Healthy Me – focuses on two man areas of health: emotional/ mental health and physical health
– Relationships – building respectful relationships with own self, families, friendships, pets and animals, love and loss.
– Changing Me – deals with change of many types from growing from young to old, becoming a teenager, puberty, self-respect and safeguarding. It also includes transition support for moving year groups or the transition to high school
Each Jigsaw lesson also include mindfulness practice which support children to observe their own thoughts and feelings as they happen, in the present moment, applying no judgement. Jigsaw teaches children to understand their thoughts and feelings through Calm Me time exercises and Pause Points for discussion. This helps to develop their awareness and their capacity to be mindful human beings. Learning is enhanced as emotions and behaviours are self-regulated. We ensure inclusivity for pupils with Special Educational Needs by offering tailored support and resources to meet diverse learning needs. Our goal is to make learning accessible and engaging for all.
