Mathematics

The Outcome – To create Mathematicians

We want our mathematicians to develop an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics. They will be curious mathematicians who think deeply about the world, approaching problems creatively and flexibly, including breaking problems down into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions. They will have an understanding of the concepts which underpin procedures, the ability to reason mathematically and to make rich connections between the different mathematical domains. They will ‘know’ numbers; develop a number sense and be able to recall and apply knowledge rapidly, accurately and efficiently. They will be able to move fluently between different representations of mathematical ideas and will be able to use manipulatives to model their mathematical thinking.

White Rose

At Barton Clough, teachers from Reception to Year 6 use White Rose Maths resources and schemes of learning published to plan effectively, producing lessons that incorporate varied fluency, reasoning and problem solving. The White Rose Maths schemes of learning are designed to support a mastery approach to teaching and learning, as well as to support the aims and objectives within the National Curriculum. The White Rose schemes have number at the heart and a lot of time is spend reinforcing number to build competency. It also provides opportunities to build reasoning and problem solving into each lesson.

White Rose believes that all children, who are introduced to a concept, should have the opportunity to build on their abilities by following a concrete-pictorial-abstract approach. Concrete – children should have the opportunity to use concrete objects to help them understand what they are doing. Pictorial – alongside this children should use pictorial representations. These representations can then be used to help reason and solve problems. Abstract – both concrete and pictorial representations should support children’s understanding of abstract methods.

TT Rockstars

When it comes to times tables, speed AND accuracy are important – the more facts a child remembers, the easier it is for them to complete harder calculations. Times Table Rock Stars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help children master the times tables. To be a Times Table Rock Star they need to answer any multiplication fact up to 12×12 in less than 3 seconds!

Each child will be given a Rock Speed and Status based on how quickly they can answer questions and how many they can answer correctly. For every multiplication fact that can be recalled, children earn coins that they can spend in the ‘Rockstar Shop’ buying accessories and clothing for their cool Rockstar characters.

Every pupil from Year 1 to Year 6 have access to an individual TT Rockstars account where they can practice their multiplication facts and collect coins.
